Soloists:
Catalin Rotaru, double bass, joined the School of Music at Arizona State University, in 2005. Mr. Rotaru is in demand as a performer and clinician throughout the world. He is a licentiate of the National University of Music from Bucharest, Romania and holds a Master’s degree in music performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Previously he was Associate Professor of Double Bass and Jazz Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, taught at Millikin University, and at the University of Illinois. He has performed both solo classical and jazz bass throughout Europe, the United States, South America and Japan.
He served as associate principal bass in the Romanian National Radio Orchestra, principal bass in the Sibiu Philharmonic Orchestra, Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra of Bucharest, Danville Symphony Orchestra, Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra, associate principal and principal bass in Sinfonia Da Camera, and principal bass of the Orchestra Sinfonica Europea.
Mr. Rotaru collaborates frequently with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra and Arizona Opera and performs extensively as soloist in recitals or with symphony orchestras throughout the United States and abroad, giving numerous clinics and master classes. He received the second prize at the 1997 International Society of Bassists Solo Division Competition and the Jury's Special Award for the best performance of the required piece at that competition. He was the winner of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts Debut Recital Award in 1997, and received the Central Illinois Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters Award in 1996. Mr. Rotaru recently completed recording his debut solo CD, entitled Bass*ic Cello Notes released by Summit Records. For the last several years, Professor Rotaru has been a frequent solo performer at the “Virtuosi” International Chamber Music Festival of Pernambuco in Brazil. Mr. Rotaru performs on a double bass made in Italy by Luciano Golia and a bow made by Marco Pasquino.
Eileen Mager - Soprano Soloist
Cleveland-born concert and recording artist Eileen Mager made her debut as a recitalist in Chicago, and has been performing concerts in the Valley for more than 20 years. She has appeared as featured soloist with the Four Seasons Orchestra, The Singers of Cantemus, the Harp Consortium, Desert Foothills Choral Foundation, and for many Valley churches. She is Staff Soloist for Christ Anglican Church in Carefree. Ms. Mager has been the Artistic Director for several of the Arizona Vivaldi Festivals, and a featured performer in many of the Festival concerts and the American premieres of two of Vivaldi's operas. A few years ago, she sang the world premiere of eight songs by French composer Germain Desbonnet for Phoenix’s French Week.
Her repertoire is very broad — everything from opera to jazz, Broadway to folk, classical religious works to spirituals and gospel. Her performances have included works of more than 80 composers, and she has sung in 16 languages. Her seven CDs -- “Christmas Treasures,” “Classic French Songs,” “Vivaldi a Due Voce,” “Broadway: Love & Laughter,” “Operatic Vivaldi: Passion, Intrigue, Revenge, & Joy,” “Jazzin’ Around,” and “Songs of Life” -- have won her an enthusiastic following among audiences and reviewers alike. She is the recipient of the Art Renaissance Initiative’s Artist of the Decade Medici Award.
Cathy Worcester, Concertmaster of the Four Seasons Orchestra of Arizona, studied violin at Boise State University with Kathryn Mitchell. At Arizona State University she studied with Eugene Lombardi where she received her Bachelors Degree in music performance. Ms. Worcester earned her Masters in Violin Performance at Indiana University where she studied with Josef Gingold. She has served as concertmaster and soloist for various orchestras in Arizona including the Mesa Symphony, Sun City Symphony, and the Arizona Opera. Ms. Worcester performs as a recitalist in Opus 2, a duo ensemble with Don Seitz. She performs in numerous string quartets including the Four Seasons String Quartet. She also teaches a large studio of violin students in Mesa, Arizona.
Haydn Concerto Competition Winners
Twenty-one high school, middle school and college music students competed on April 11th in the Haydn Concerto Competition. There were many extremely talented musicians who performed their Haydn concertos. The four winners are listed below.

Tied for Third Place - Usha Kapoor - Haydn Violin Concerto in C
The Awards Ceremony will take place on Friday May 22nd at 7:00 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Phoenix on Lincoln Dr. in PV. Mia Laity will be performing the first movement of the Haydn Violin Concerto in C at the Haydn Bicentennial Festival Concert with the Four Seasons Orchestra.
